Welcome to the
Rhode Island Mobile Sportfishermen Website!

The Rhode Island Mobile Sportfishermen, or RIMS, fishing club was founded in 1958 by  a group of fisherman that frequented East Beach and the Charlestown, Rhode Island areas. As a family oriented club, RIMS was organized with a mission dedicated to the preservation and conservation of our coastal resources, as well as maintaining public beach access. Today, RIMS continues its stance on public beach access, preservation & conservation, and the protection of our fisheries. Visit our Mission page for a more thorough and detailed explanation of our history and mission.

                            President’s letter
Another summer has come to an end and the fall fishing is underway. There have been plenty of fish and bait around even during the day fishing has been fantastic with some large bass taken on poppers!!! I would recommend you go out and wet a line. Remember fall is the time to get the fish of a lifetime Please take part in the fall fishing tournaments and have some fun...

I want to thank all committee chair people and there volunteers who have worked so hard and put so much time into helping out this year on so many things such as the 50th, dinner dance, spring grass plant beach clean up and trail trimming, News Letter, 2008 Auto bond international beach clean up, Pot Luck dinner, Property improvements, Trailer storage, access, conservation, and more. I thank you all so much for stepping up and helping out!!!

If anyone would like to volunteer to help out your club by becoming a committee chair person or helping out on a committee please contact me. The club needs your help to run smoothly. RIMS also has other expenses on the horizon in the near future such as a new septic system as well as building and grounds maintenance projects for Woody Hill Rd.

As you probably have noticed the dues have gone up this year mostly due to the attorneys fees associated with the successful fight to keep vehicle access open to the state land on Quonnie.

Informational Updates
There are a number of ways we provide the latest info about what is going on with the club, the plovers and the most current sand trail restrictions (if any). We put updates in our newsletter, post urgent messages on our website (www.rimobilesportfishermen.org), conduct phone trees to inform our membership, e-mailings (to all who have a current e-mail address on file) and discussions at our monthly meetings which are open to all of our members! It is very frustrating when people still say I DIDN’T KNOW, this is NO LONGER an acceptable excuse? This is a very serious matter and we are addressing it very seriously. So in an effort to take away all excuses we have added one more way to mistake proof the beach information. We now have a phone number and message system that can be instantly changed and updated when the situation on the beach changes whether it be, piping plovers, fishing contest, fishing reports or whatever is appropriate at the time. Now you can call ahead before you leave your house or on the way and get the latest sand trail info, fishing reports or who knows?

The number is 401-256-5020 so write it down, put it in your phone, and keep it!!!

It is YOUR responsibility to know the rules No Excuses!!!

Sunshine Committee

This is a picture of Ernie (Gilligan) and Carol Garbauskas Rims # 350 taken around 1978. (Remember that huge log that washed up on the beach back then I'm sure a lot of pictures were taken on this log)?
They have been my friends since the early 70's in fact Gilligan's siblings and my  siblings grew up on RIMS beach. (Sorry but the picture would not print in the newsletter, Ken)
Carol Garbauskas Rims # 350 has been battled a Meningioma tumor in her brain for the past two years and it keeps coming back. She has had 3 brain surgeries, the last one was several months ago. The tumor is growing again and because of the 3 previous surgeries they are unable to operate any more. Conventional radiation and Chemo have failed to halt the growth if left un-treaded she will go blind and eventually pass on.

Carol has one more chance and it's an extensive new Neuron Radiation  treatment at Mass General hospital in Boston. We are hoping and praying that it is successful. If any RIMS members have prayer chains, putting her on it will be greatly appreciated.
Ernie currently works for a landscape co, but he is about to loose his job. Carol works for Publix a food chain in Florida. They are good and honest people and I know a lot of the older members know both of them.

Their med and travel bills are mounting let alone the housing bills they will en-cure for the daily treatments. If you would like to help them  their address is:

Thanks, Richard Rzasa RIMS #482
