Welcome to the
Rhode Island Mobile Sportfishermen Website!

The Rhode Island Mobile Sportfishermen, or RIMS, fishing club was founded in 1958 by  a group of fisherman that frequented East Beach and the Charlestown, Rhode Island areas. As a family oriented club, RIMS was organized with a mission dedicated to the preservation and conservation of our coastal resources, as well as maintaining public beach access. Today, RIMS continues its stance on public beach access, preservation & conservation, and the protection of our fisheries. Visit our Mission page for a more thorough and detailed explanation of our history and mission.

Message from the President

I would like to thank all RIMS members for there cooperation during the piping plover season and the sand trail restrictions. With your help we made it through another successful plover nesting season.

The stripped bass and blue fishing is a little slow this summer with most bass in the 12 to 15 lbs range with a few better fish once in a while. Fluke fishing has been good with more keepers than last year. Jumbo porgies were abundant for most boat fishermen and it’s been easy to limit out on keepers from the surf. A surprise this year were the abundance of black sea bass in good numbers and big sizes, yours truly boating a 24".

The fall season will soon be upon us, Good for fishing not so good for what comes next...

Remember to enter your catch in all RIMS tournaments their are some empty spots still left in the JR. division's. (see current results in this newsletter) Check the web site for details of the Al Zumwalt, Yearly, Sand Spike, and other contest.

Also on the agenda is the pot luck dinner on the beach in Sept. check for the date and time elsewhere in this news letter or on line. This event is very casual and lots of fun last year was a surprise clam chowder cook off. You never know what might happen this year. Come and bring your best dish. It's FREE!!!!

Another reminder is the fall beach clean up coming soon check out conservation for details and time. Please attend we need your help & bring a friend.

See you on the beach...

Jim Milardo President, RIMS

Obviously the past year has shown us as a club and as individuals how fragile our beach access rights are, even as property owners. This is not our problem alone. Beach access is at risk all over the country. In order to preserve these rights it is important to stay informed of current issues and legislation that are trying to limit those rights. The following link is to a national grassroots organization fighting to protect these rights that is very informative and allows you make a difference.

Announcing H796 a bill to designate wild striped bass as game fish in the state waters of Massachusetts.  We urge all of our members to go to http://www.mass.gov/legis/, find their represenatives, and send them an e-mail today in your own words that asks them to support H796, a bill to make striped bass a game fish in Massachusetts.  HD 245- now called H796 - since it has been assigned to committte, a bill to make striped bass a game fish in Massachusetts was introduced to the MA legislature in January of 2009.  Attached you will find a copy of the bill as well as a list of the objective Stripers Forever hopes to achieve with this legislation.  Please follow link for more info...

Some great news from the State of New York.

UPDATE MARCH 4 2010.

S4948, the Senate version of the bill to prohibit commercial fishing for striped bass in the Hudson River was reviewed without opposition by the Environmental Conservation Committee.  This bill, which has already passed the State Assembly, now goes to the Senate Codes Committee, chaired by Senator Eric Schneiderman.

A4112, a bill to prohibit commercial fishing for striped bass in the Hudson River - effectively making it a game fish there - has already passed the Assembly. S4948, the Senate version of this bill, is coming up for a hearing before the Environmental Conservation Committee on Feb. 23. The bill is sponsored by Senator Antoine M. Thompson, the Chairman of the committee. The Hudson is the second largest spawning ground for striped bass; keeping it free from the pressures of commercial gill netting is vital to the health of the striper population. We all need to get behind this bill now to make sure it takes effect.  Please follow link for more info...
